Mobilab & Care

Thomas More, the largest university of applied sciences in Flanders, offers over 50 bachelor degree programmes in the province of Antwerp and aims to play a strategic role in Flanders' education and research. Mobilab & Care is a multidisciplinary centre of expertise conducting applied research into wellbeing and technology. Apart from a direct link with bachelor of Orthopedic technology at Thomas More, Mobilab & Care has close partnerships with a variety of SMEs, hospitals, rehabilitation centers and research institutions. Mobilab & Care has built up specific expertise in rehabilitation engineering and orthopedic technology, focused on development and testing of innovative orthotic and prosthetic technologies and appliances and on validation of rehabilitation protocols aiming for direct implementation into the field.

Mobilab & Care has been participating in different EU projects in the field of health technologies: eMen (Interreg NW Europe): digital mental health; LUCAS (Erasmus+): coma awakenings through sport; A-Footprint (FP7):  development of novel ankle-foot and foot orthoses; To Walk Again Postrehabilitation centre (ERDF); Recap (Interreg NEW IVB): regional care portals; Motex (Cornet): development of smart textiles; FOOTyWEAR (Cornet): innovative footwear design; Arthe (Cornet): development of an active wearable elbow orthosis; Optiflow (Crossroads2, Interreg): optimal flow meters in respiratory physiotherapy; OVERAS (Era SME): testing protocols for footwear; Applodynsca (Era SME): dynamic 3D scanning in orthopedics; Intellicare (Crossroads, Interreg): remote diagnostics and telemonitoring, etc.

Project role

Within MOTION, Mobilab & Care is involved in:
  • Development of lower limb exoskeleton technology
  • Testing and validation of different prototypes, both in the lab and in a clinical setting
  • Implementation of knowledge and technology in clinical practice
